The feast of Christmas on December 25th is first mentioned by a chronographer in 354 A.D. who calls it the Natalis Invicti, or the Anniversary of Birth of the Unconquered, but who or what was unconquered? Though the actual day of Christ’s birth is unknown, this day in December was chosen to combat and transform the pagan celebration of the Birth of the Unconquered Sun, a celebration of the sun and winter solstice, to reveal the true Sun of Justice (Mal. 4:2) and Light of the World (John 8:12), Jesus Christ. Just when things seem darkest and the sun seems to be snuffed out in the dead of winter, Christ enters the world to dispel fear, death, and the darkness of sin. The celebration in Rome of December 25th as Christmas probably predates its first mention by the chronographer and began at least around 330 A.D.
