The day after Christmas is the celebration of St. Stephen. Why would Stephen, who never knew the baby Jesus, and who died after Jesus’ Ascension into heaven be celebrated so close to Christmas? If Christmas time is about the revelation, manifestation or epiphanies of Jesus Christ, then how fitting is it to celebrate Stephen who first manifested and bore witness to Jesus – the word martyr means witness – to the world? Because St. Stephen was a deacon, this was also a special day filled with festivities for deacons.
